Need Best Recorder And The Price is Reasonable? Then Zoom H4n is your BEST SOLUTION
The Zoom H4n looks more study and robust than the previous model, but the design still good. Compared to the H2, this H4n has a significantly larger body, so for you who don’t want a big recorder because can’t fit in your shirt pocket you should pass this Zoom H4n. Inside the bundle, Zoom H4n comes with a 1GB SD card, and you can upgrade up to 32GB using a SDHC card, big enough!. From field report, we can give good information that using 8GB Kingston SD card, there was a little problem, where the Zoom H4n didn’t recognize the card, but the problem can be solved easily, just ejecting and re-inserting the card. The good news is that this have nothing to do with H4n, but rather a faulty of SD card itself.
The LCD navigation screen is reasonably big for what the Zoom H4n is intended for. The main button is a jog wheel on the right side of the device that allows navigation through most of the menus. The buttons feel good in terms of build quality. Superb quality!
As all of us know, that Zoom has a good reputation for creating great guitar effect pedals, and their product have good price, e.g. the G2 which are great for beginners new to effects and amp modeling. And this H4n, as their recently released product, so far has proven so popular with the mainstream guitar playing audiences. Either the Zoom H4 or H4n, they are handy little tool that is extremely portable and provides decent recording quality. And the Zoom H4n promises us that this will be a big step upgrade from the H2 or even the H4, and it has incorporated lessons learnt from the Zoom H2 and H4 customer feedback.
Zoom H4n Capability
This new Zoom H4n has good features you can rely on. It is fully loaded by many utilities and functions that even you won’t ever use. It is a mobile recorder, USB 2.0 audio interface, metronome, guitar amp simulator, effects simulator, tuner and even has an onboard speaker for on-the-fly verification of the recorder sound.
The H4n has two in-built in microphones are placed in an X-Y configuration that suits those that want something to easily record acoustic guitar with. The X-Y configuration of two microphones allows for recording of a wider stereo image and usually sounds better than recording using a single microphone. This microphone can be twisted to switch the microphones to record at ninety degrees to each other to a hundred and twenty degrees to each other, allowing for a wider stereo image.
The mobile recorder function, this function has three modes – stereo, 4 channels and multi-track. In Stereo mode, there’s only one mode for us to choose, either the front two microphones or two microphones/line inputs of our choice into the XLR inputs. In 4 channels mode, we can use the front two microphones and two XLR inputs combined. This can be especially useful we want to combine, say for a magnetic pickup input on acoustic guitar with the inputs from the Zoom onboard microphones. Multi-track mode allows the user to record four tracks that overdub each other, much like multi-track recording software. However, the multi-track mode proved to be a bit too complicated, and better you plug the Zoom H4n into a computer as a USB 2.0 device and use the included software to record everything from there. Using a USB 2.0 audio interface, the Zoom H4n gives respectable performance that allowing us to record two tracks at a time.
The Metronome can be useful for practicing and is quite configurable. But it only works when you have headphones or earphones plugged into the 1/8″ jack, the reason is, you can’t hear the voices through the speakers. The amp simulator and effects are somewhat intertwined into what Zoom called it as patches. Within a patch we can choose which amp simulator and effect we want, don’t expect the versatility or sound quality of Zoom’s newest mainstream guitar pedals. For you who want do a casual practicing with headphones though, the sound quality is ok. But there’s one minor downer, it is the fact that the amp models and effects can only be used in multi-track mode.
Sound Quality If someone ask where’s the real diamond of Zoom H4n is, it is about the sound quality. The Zoom H4n can record various mp3 modes up to 320kbps or wav files up until 24bits, 96kHz sampling rate. The onboard microphones sound really good for a device at this price point. But you must not expect the microphones to sound like two regular phantom powered condenser microphones though. At overall, the sound of the onboard microphones a bit shard and hi-fi sounding. If you want to crave better quality, you can use the twin XLR inputs. And you can feed in two condenser microphone inputs because the Zoom H4n has 48V phantom power. This of course means that to record for long sessions using external microphones, you will have to plug in the included adapter into a wall-wart. The 4-channel mode can be useful for combining microphone and another source such as magnetic pickup. Here is a recorded sample with the onboard microphones and M1 Active. The onboard speaker is only good enough for playing back what you already recorded, it is not meant for listening at high volumes. The speakers tended to distort when the volume is increased. However, listening through earphones using the 1/8″ jack proved that the speaker is the weak link.
Conclusion
If you are an acoustic finger-style player, the Zoom H4n Recorder will simply more convenient than a dedicated audio interface. It is great for practicing with the included metronome. The intuitive and no-brainer recording functions in stereo and 4 channel mode allowed you to use the onboard microphones for rough recording, or plug in an extra 2 small diaphragm condenser microphones for a very full image.
Overall, this is a device that you will be using it for a long time to come.
